Using data supplied by Thames Water, we compiled a table showing the number and length of ‘spills’ into the Mole, from Crawley down to Leatherhead.
The figures speak for themselves.
Check Dorking which has increased both the number and length of spills by a huge amount (from 1118 hrs in year 2019 to 2101 hrs in year 2020); also Holmwood which is not many miles upstream.

Data on MAJOR THAMES WATER SEWAGE DISCHARGES INTO THE RIVER MOLE
FOCUS OF THE PROBLEM:
The sewage outlet on the banks of the River Mole in Pixham near Dorking. On the upper left you can see a row of bubbles, and a steady stream of them shows when there is a discharge.
Thames Water are allowed to discharge around 10 million litres of TREATED sewage daily and our roving reporter went along to see what this looked like. DCE have asked for more information about the permit for this discharge. Watch this space!
When she was there, at approx 4.45pm Sunday 20th Jan, our roving reporter noticed a foul smell and the rate of bubbles increased. Was this a permitted discharge? We’ve written for more information.

a) If you’re walking that way check the outlet, take a photo of any unusual activity or smell & email us at contact@dorking-climate-emergency.net. To get there, walk down from the Watermill pub on the footpath to the left of the carpark, go right for Castle Mill, cross the river, go under the railway viaduct and the outlet is around 250m along the bank. Look out for that elusive kingfisher!
