Climate Breakdown 2 Minute Briefing

What’s The Problem?

Human emissions of greenhouse gases are causing global warming due to the “greenhouse effect”, resulting in climate breakdown. This is happening now and is accelerating fast.

Global temperatures have already increased by more than 1 degree Celsius from pre-industrial levels and are continuing to rise. The impacts are being felt around the world.

We must drastically and quickly move towards elimination of our greenhouse gas emissions. The longer we delay we harder it will be.

Threats To Human Life & Wellbeing. Everywhere. Now.

Food supply threatened by droughts, heatwaves and floods. Species going extinct at the rate of 150+ a day. Tropical diseases spreading northwards as land masses heat up. Increase in range and severity of wildfires which destroy land, property and lives of people and wildlife. Toxic air with more pollution ‘hot-spots’ in cities and towns. Dying oceans, becoming warmer and more acidic.  Changes in long-established currents and weather patterns which create more violent hurricanes and cyclones. Rising sea levels:  Bangladesh, the Maldives, Florida, low-lying coastal areas all over the world. Extreme and deadly weather events. Eg in 2019: Zimbabwe, Mozambique & Malawi (500+dead), Iran  (62 +dead), Papua New Guinea (80+ dead). And it’s only April.

THESE ARE COMBINING TO CREATE A FUTURE WHERE THE FOLLOWING BECOMES NORMAL:

  • Death / serious illness because of heat and pollution (happening now)
  • Starvation (happening now)
  • Fresh, drinkable water running out (happening now)
  • Mass migration across and within countries (happening now)
  • International conflict and wars over scarce resources (not yet, though happening at local and tribal level)
  • Social and economic collapse

I Feel Helpless. What Can I Do?

climate change is the biggest thingYou are not helpless.

IF YOU ONLY DO ONE THING: join a group to put pressure on local, national and international governments to speed up their responses. Look on the internet or respond to this document to find out more.

Individual action still matters: inform yourself, buy less, travel less by car and plane, change to a renewable power supplier, cut down on meat & dairy, buy responsibly. But you can’t fix this alone.

Worthwhile and rapid change has to start NOW.  Party politics are irrelevant. Put pressure on local election candidates and politicians to agree a united approach to climate action by committing to a ‘carbon neutral by 2030’ agenda. Start point: https://climateemergency.uk/

Perspective

The “pale blue dot” photograph, 1990, taken by Voyager 1 looking back to Earth from 3.7 billion miles. Earth is ringed. Help is not coming. It’s up to us.

We are the product of an eternity of evolution.

As far as we know we are the only intelligent life in the universe.

Now we face an existential crisis.

Our story can’t end here.

It’s our turn to be brave, to be human, to act.

Join us.
