What a memorable start. On Saturday Sept 4th we were welcomed by Mr Frank Lee Speaking and Polly the Polar Bear who invited us in for a cuppa.
Cllr Claire Malcolmson cut the bunting to officially open us, then we unveiled Uncle Stubble’s brilliant painting, ‘You Choose’.After that we partied, with vegan food and beautiful guitar playing by Anthony. Julian was out on the street with his ‘Dorking Tees for Life’ stall. He gave over 35 tiny saplings to interested passers-by to plant in their gardens.
On the Thursday and Friday before then our volunteers were out on the street, talking to passers-by of all ages. They gave out hundreds of leaflets, loads of booklets and – yes – many people ventured inside to find out how to make make simple life-style changes and help save the planet.
We held our first ‘Big Friday’ meeting, about Biodiversity, in the beautiful and spacious Abraham Dixon Hall at the Leatherhead Institute on the High St. Sarah Jane Chimbwandira and John Blewett spoke powerfully about solutions, as well as threats and challenges: most of the audience stayed on for ages working out how to improve their local area and Surrey.
The Hub is open again on Thursday, Friday and Saturday – we coud always do with more volunteers, so email us on contact@dorking-climate-emergency if you’d like to join in the action.
